Artur Damião

Data Scientist & Sociologist

Hey, I’m happy you’re here

Thanks for stopping by!

I’m a sociologist currently pursuing my Master’s degree at the University of São Paulo (USP), one of Latin America’s leading research institutions. My research interests include the application of social and spatial data science within the fields of criminal dynamics, policing, and public safety.

My current projects utilize criminal data and socioeconomic variables to explore the effects of over- and under-policing within the city of São Paulo. By analyzing these spatial disparities, I aim to understand how institutional presence and urban dynamics shape public safety. Learn more about my research interests in publications.

About me

Social scientist, curious about all intersections of data and society.

I enjoy using R to optimize my data science workflow and have noticed it making guest appearances elsewhere in my life.

I worked as a Research Assistant at the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM), where I focused on municipal councils and developed web scraping methods to collect and analyze data. I also served as an Assistant Instructor for several undergraduate courses in the Sociology, Antropology and Political Science departments, helping students navigate theory and methodology.

In addition to my academic background, I have provided consultancy services for public policy firms, applying data-driven insights to address real-world social challenges. I am particularly interested in research that combines social and spatial data science with open data sources in ways that prioritize equity and public safety in urban communities.
